It’s Christmas! What a wonderful time for love. If it doesn’t feel like Christmas to you, start hugging people. Hug your family. Hug your friends. Hug your dog. Surprise someone and kiss them unexpectedly. Affection is an infection. A little exposure to it and everyone comes down with joy.
My pastor frequently points out that we have a core need to give. We often ignore it and become all Scroogey. That just cheats us out of the blessing. It’s not about money or stuff. It’s about affectionate contact. The gift that works Christmas magic is the one that achieves that.
“Jesus said, ‘Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.'” Matthew 19:14
Who is more affectionate than a small child? So pure and simple. The most affectionate person in my life is my 3 year old daughter. When she hugs me my world is ok. There is nothing else for that moment.
It’s challenging for us adults to drop our guard. Maybe we’re afraid someone will take a swing at us. It happens. So like the TSA, we overcompensate in the name of security, sacrificing humanity in the process. Bleah! I’m putting my scanner down. I’ve decided to take the hit and just pour out my affection.
